Essential oil: sweet orange

  1. Aromatherapy likes to use orange oil to create a pleasant, calming atmosphere. From a medical point of view, it is mainly for reducing feelings of anxiety and stress and to promote sleep the essential oil from the peel of the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis var. Dulcis or Citrus sinensis var. Sinensis).

Botanical aspects

  1. The sweet orange tree originates from East Asia and from there was spread over (sub) tropical regions, such as Florida and the Mediterranean. This small (up to 6 m), evergreen tree with its straight trunk, numerous branches and dense crown bears glossy green leaves and blooms for a long time with delightful smelling blossoms. The orange fruit is the well-known orange with its juicy and vitamin C-rich flesh. About 200 kg of ripe skins are required to produce 1 liter of yellow to orange oil, which is obtained by cold pressing and not by distillation. This oil has a vibrant, fresh fruity scent with a sweet undertone.

Important ingredients

  1. Monoterpenes (up to 80%) with mainly limonene (> 49%), also alphapinene, myrcene and sabinene; monoterpene alcohols (<6%) with mainly linalol (1.8%), also alpha terpineol, cis and trans carveol and geraniol; aldehydes (1.1 to 2.8%) with n-octanal, n-decanal and citronellal; ketones with carvone and alpha ionone; coumarins and furocoumarins with aurapten, bergaptol and iso-imperatorin.

Main features and indications; applications

  1. The main reason why sweet orange oil is used is its sedative (calming) effect. With nervousness, restlessness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping as well as nervous palpitations, this oil can be expected to have a relaxing effect. This oil is milder than bitter orange oils and is very suitable for children.

Use

  1. Diffusion: a few drops in the aroma diffuser for a relaxing atmosphere, to calm restless children and to sleep better. Can be combined with lavender oil and ylang ylang bath (after emulsification in a neutral shampoo, cream or milk): 4 to 5 drops on a full bath oral intake: 1 to 2 drops 3 times a day (e.g. in a spoonful of honey or oil) for nervousness and palpitations through the skin (afterwards no exposure to the sun): 1 to 3 drops in fatty oil
