Gallstones: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment and Removal

Gallstones in men or women do not always give clear symptoms, but complaints arise when a gallstone gets stuck. Stones from a millimeter to an inch or larger can form in the gallbladder. These are called gallstones. Little is known about the cause of this. About three in ten people have gallstones, often without them. Complaints arise when a walking gallstone gets stuck in the bile ducts, obstructing the flow of bile fluid. By contracting violently, the gallbladder tries to remove the obstruction. This can cause severe pain in the upper right abdomen: the so-called biliary colic or bile attack. This pain can last from one to four hours. Additional complaints that may occur are: nausea, vomiting and jaundice. Only gallstones that cause (serious) complaints should be treated. Gallstones may be prevented by a healthy diet or a healthy diet.
