Hair pain: what is it?

  1. Any kind of pain is of course annoying. Everyone has a severe headache or stomach ache from time to time and that makes no one happy. Less common, but also incredibly irritating is hair pain. Some people suffer from it regularly, while others have never had it and cannot imagine what it feels like.

What is hair pain?

  1. With hair pain, sometimes referred to as trichodynia, one feels a superficial pain on the scalp, at the hair roots. So it is certainly not the same as a headache. Hair pain does not necessarily have to be on the scalp, but can also occur in the hair of the eyebrows. However, there are no visible symptoms, no flakes or redness can be seen on the scalp. Sometimes it is bothered after wearing the hair in a ponytail or bun. Hair pain can also occur with tangles, or after washing or wearing a hat. But sometimes her pain doesn't seem to have a clear cause at all: it just pops up, suddenly, from one moment to the next. But what exactly is the pain you feel?

How does hair pain occur?

  1. The way in which hair pain develops has never been precisely established. No research has yet been done with clear results. However, there are already several different theories about the existence of hair pain.

Twitching muscles

  1. A small muscle is attached to each hair follicle, to all hairs all over the body. This muscle also ensures that the hair is raised in goosebumps. Normally this mainly happens with stress, tension and cold, but it is possible that these muscles can sometimes contract in such a way that there is a bad feeling, the hair pain. This can be caused by, for example, wearing a tail.

Inflamed or irritated hair follicles

  1. The upper parts of the hair follicle can become inflamed. This is then referred to as folliculitis. This can irritate the skin, which could also be a cause of hair pain. However, when these become inflamed, red bumps will form on the skin, which is not the case with hair pain.

Stimulation of pain nerves on the scalp

  1. There are painful nerves in the skin all over the body, to warn of possible damage to tissues. On the scalp, these nerves can be stimulated in such a way that it causes hair pain.

Stress and psychological problems

  1. Here the development of hair pain is approached in a completely different way: it could be caused by psychological problems and stress, or at least more common in people who suffer from this. The latter has indeed been shown by research (Sisli Etfal Training and Research Hospital, 2003).

What can you do for hair pain?

  1. Since the cause of hair pain is therefore not yet known, there are no treatments or medicines that can be used with certainty. Paracetamol generally does not work for hair pain. You can wait to see if the pain disappears on its own, or to wash the hair again, change shampoo, or comb it. In some people this seems to help, but it can also make pain worse.
