Is apple syrup healthy?

  1. Apple syrup is made from apples and sugar. It is delicious on bread, on a pancake or in a stew. It is said to be healthy because it contains a lot of iron. But it also contains a lot of sugar, which is why it is not included in the Wheel of Five. Today most apple syrups are tart apple syrups. Rinse apple syrups contain 55 to 70% sugar.

Rinse apple syrup

  1. Rinse apple syrup is made from apples and the juice of sugar beet (beetroot juice). This apple syrup often contains about 70% sugar beet juice and 30% apple juice. Sometimes there is even almost no apple in it. Sugar beet juice is cheaper and tastes sweeter: that's why manufacturers like to use it.

Sugar

  1. A slice of bread with 20 grams of apple syrup contains about 3 sugar cubes. There are also "pure" apple syrups made from apples only, but they are in the minority. They often contain a little less sugar. Because apple syrup contains a lot of sugar, it is not listed in the Wheel of Five. This also applies to other forms of sweet fillings. But you can choose a sandwich with sweet toppings, such as apple syrup, every day; if you eat a healthy diet, it fits in with a healthy diet. Nice tips to vary with toppings.

Iron

  1. Apple syrup contains a lot of iron. Hence, it is often claimed to be healthy. The iron in apple syrup does not come from the apples but from the sugar beets. There is hardly any iron in apples. Apple syrup contains about 13 mg of iron per 100 grams. Spread about 20 grams of apple syrup on a sandwich, so 2.5 mg of iron. An adult man needs 9 mg of iron, a woman who menstruates 15 mg. Syrup does help to get your iron, but it is healthier to get it from products that are in the Wheel of Five, such as meat, dark green vegetables such as spinach and kale, beans and nuts. The kind of iron in apple syrup is non-heme iron. Your body is less able to absorb this than heme iron, which is only found in animal products. Tip: take something with a lot of vitamin C if you eat syrup or other foods with iron. For example a kiwi, a bowl of strawberries or orange. The vitamin C ensures that the iron is better absorbed.

Save

  1. Apple syrup is best kept dry, just in your kitchen cupboard. It does not get moldy because it contains little water and a lot of sugar. It is not necessary to keep it in the refrigerator. However, a layer of condensation can form on it (small droplets). That is not harmful, but it may look a bit strange.

Other poachers

  1. There are also (rinse) pear syrups and syrups that are mixtures of apples and pears. You can read what is in the product on the label. For example, you can see how much sugar it contains. Comparing works best per 100 grams, not per portion.

Can you say that one product is healthy?

  1. You cannot really say whether one product is healthy. It always depends on how much or how often you eat or drink it. We can therefore say whether a product fits in a healthy diet. Read more
