Is apple syrup healthy?

Apple syrup is made from apples and sugar. It is delicious on bread, on a pancake or in a stew. It is said to be healthy because it contains a lot of iron. Iron

Apple syrup contains a lot of iron. Hence, it is often claimed to be healthy. The iron in apple syrup does not come from the apples but from the sugar beets. There is hardly any iron in apples. Apple syrup contains about 13 mg of iron per 100 grams. Spread about 20 grams of apple syrup on a sandwich, so 2.5 mg of iron. An adult man needs 9 mg of iron, a woman who menstruates 15 mg. Syrup does help to get your iron, but it is healthier to get it from products that are in the Wheel of Five, such as meat, dark green vegetables such as spinach and kale, beans and nuts. The kind of iron in apple syrup is non-heme iron. Your body is less able to absorb this than heme iron, which is only found in animal products. Tip: take something with a lot of vitamin C if you eat syrup or other foods with iron. For example a kiwi, a bowl of strawberries or orange. The vitamin C ensures that the iron is better absorbed.

Apple syrup is best kept dry, just in your kitchen cupboard. It does not get moldy because it contains little water and a lot of sugar. It is not necessary to keep it in the refrigerator. However, a layer of condensation can form on it (small droplets). That is not harmful, but it may look a bit strange.
