Is decaffeinated coffee really decaffeinated?

  1. Good question! In this section, HealthNet will look for the answers to gnawing questions. This time: is decaf coffee really decaffeinated?

  1. If you want to drink less or no coffee because of the caffeine content in it, then you quickly reach for decaffeinated coffee. But is decaffeinated coffee really decaffeinated? The answer is: no, decaffeinated coffee is not completely decaffeinated. One cup of 125 ml still contains 2 to 4 milligrams of caffeine. Compared to 'regular' coffee, where the same cup can contain as much as 60 to 85 milligrams of caffeine, this is of course very little. How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee depends on the type of coffee (filter, instant or espresso), how strong it is brewed and the size of the cup.

What does caffeine contain?

  1. The substance caffeine is naturally found in coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa beans, guarana berries and cola nuts. Besides coffee, products like tea, cola, iced tea, chocolate (milk), energy drinks, energy shots and drinks with guarana contain caffeine. There are also several products with extra caffeine on the market today, such as chewing gum, candy and water.
