Is eating a lot of fish healthy?

  1. I think I eat fish every day: twice a week tuna and twice a week canned herring with tomato sauce. In addition, I bake a piece of salmon every week and I also eat mackerel. Is this healthy or can you also eat too much fish?

  1. Patricia Schutte, nutritionist Eating fish is very healthy, but more is not always better. Eating more than two servings of fish per week has little or no effect. Only people who are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease or who have previously had a heart attack or stroke can benefit from more fish.

Fatty fish

  1. The Health Council advises adults to consume 450 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids from fish (fish fatty acids) per day. You can do this by eating two servings of fish per week, at least once of which is oily fish. Fatty fish consists of more than 10 percent fat: mackerel, herring, salmon, eel, halibut, kibbles, sardines, among others. This does not only have to be fresh fish: frozen and canned fish are also fine.

Harmful substances

  1. Yet there is a downside to eating a lot of fish. Pollution of the environment can cause harmful substances in fish. This mainly concerns heavy metals, dioxins, PCBs or pesticide residues. Fatty fish are more polluted than lean ones, because harmful substances are stored in the fat. Not something to worry about right away. The good effects of regularly eating fish far outweigh the possible adverse consequences. But it is wise not to eat the same fish all the time and not to eat more than four servings (together about 400-500 grams) of fatty fish per week.

Durability I would also like to emphasize that it is also not that sustainable to eat so much fish. Fishing causes nature and environmental problems for various fish species. Major problems in caught fish are overfishing, degradation of ecosystems, bycatch and energy consumption. Fish farming involves the use of fishmeal, veterinary medicines (antibiotics), manure production and energy and water consumption. The MSC and VISwijzer quality marks can help you choose sustainably caught fish. Maybe trade in a fish for a tasty vegetarian meal? Do you also have a question? Then ask one of our experts. Always go to your doctor with urgent questions, the experts are not the right person for that. They also don't make diagnoses. You can find the other conditions here.
