Is heating food in the microwave harmful?

  1. No. Reheating food in a microwave is not dangerous to health. You can safely defrost and heat food in the microwave. A microwave heats food with harmless electromagnetic radiation. This sets moisture particles in the food in motion and heat is released through friction. These so-called microwaves are not radioactive and harmless.

Microwave radiation research

  1. Scientific research shows that there is no reason to worry about possible harmful substances released when you heat food in a microwave. Reheating food in the microwave is just as safe as reheating it in a pan or in the oven. Be careful if you have a crack in the glass door of the microwave or if the door no longer closes properly. Then it is better to have the device repaired or disposed of.

What is not in the microwave?

  1. Food with a skin around it is sometimes not possible in the microwave. Because of the peel, the heat cannot escape and they can explode. Think of eggs and grapes. For jars with a lid, always take the lid off. With the lid on, jars can explode in the microwave. You cannot put metal (steel) pans in the microwave either.

Microwave cooking

  1. Not everyone does it, but it is possible: cooking with the microwave. All food that can be cooked, steamed or poached can also be cooked in the microwave. Think of vegetables, potatoes, but also meat and fish. The advantage is that you need to use less or no moisture with the microwave. Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, are therefore better preserved. The microwave is also very suitable for "lean" cooking. When you bake, you use oil or fat. This is not necessary in the microwave. In addition, less salt is needed, because the salt remains in the dish and does not soak into the cooking liquid.

Defrost

  1. Large pieces of meat are less suitable for defrosting in the microwave. That's because the outside is already cooked, while the inside is still frozen. Small pieces of meat or fish, or small leftovers, are easy to defrost in a microwave with defrost setting. Read how to properly defrost meat and fish.

Stir and toss

  1. The only disadvantage of a microwave is that the heat is sometimes not evenly distributed over the dish. Even if it has a turntable, the inner part of, for example, a frozen lasagna cannot be heated as well as the outer edges. That is why it is important to heat meals in small equal pieces and to scoop often in between. [! 176681 => 1130 = 5!] Stir and toss
