Is too much vitamin B6 harmful?

If you consume too much vitamin B6 per day for a long time, it can be harmful. It can damage the nervous system, causing numbness, tingling, or severe nerve pain in the hands and feet. You call this peripheral neuropathy.

The recommended daily amount of B6 The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin B6 for adults is 1.5 milligrams per day. This is the amount you need to stay healthy. You need vitamin B6 for blood production and the proper functioning of the immune system and the nervous system. If you eat a varied diet according to the Wheel of Five, you will get enough vitamin B6 through meat, eggs and bread, for example. Shortages hardly occur in the Netherlands.

How do you get too much vitamin B6?

It is not possible to get an excess of vitamin B6 with the normal diet. This can only happen if you take too many vitamin supplements or vitamin supplements with high levels of vitamin B6.

What if you take vitamin supplements? The use of vitamin supplements is unnecessary for most people as it does not provide any additional health benefit. If you do use a vitamin supplement, it is advisable to take no more than 100% percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA). On the label, the reference intake (RI) indicates the recommended daily amount. In the case of vitamin B6, you do not take more than 1.5 milligrams per day via a supplement.
No more than 21 milligrams in supplements

From 1 October 2018, the Commodities Act states that supplements may not contain more than 21 milligrams of vitamin B6 per day. This amount is somewhat lower than the acceptable upper limit of 25 milligrams. You also get vitamin B6 through food, this has been taken into account. There are currently supplements on the market that contain more vitamin B6 than this legal maximum. Retailers are still allowed to sell stocks, and supplements are sometimes sold via the internet that contain too much vitamin B6. These supplements can be harmful to health. So always check the label when you buy supplements with vitamin B6 and in any case do not take supplements with more than 21 milligrams per day.
