Kohlrabi: Health Benefits, Nutritional Value and Cultivation

  1. The kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea convar. Acephala alef. Var. Gongylodes) is a vegetable and one of the many cultivation forms of cabbage. Usually only the above-ground tuber is consumed. Depending on the species, it can be spherical, round or oval in shape; the colors vary from whitish to pale and strong green to reddish or violet. Besides the tuber, you can also use the leaves of the kohlrabi. The leaves of the kohlrabi are dark green and serrated and, even more than the tuber itself, it has excellent nutritional value.

What is kohlrabi?

  1. The kohlrabi is a vegetable with a fresh and sweet taste. Raw, the taste resembles radishes, previously cooked on cauliflower. Kohlrabi is one of the many varieties of cabbage and belongs to the finial family, along with cauliflower, kale, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, bok choy, radish, Brussels sprouts, watercress and white cabbage

Nutritional value of kohlrabi

  1. Vitamins and minerals In addition to potassium, calcium and magnesium, this cabbage also contains phosphorus, iron and the rarer selenium. When it comes to potassium, kohlrabi is one of the champions: 320 milligrams per 100 grams ensures that it reaches the highest class of potassium-rich food, which is why kohlrabi is a great vegetable for high blood pressure and stroke

Leaves also have nutritional value

  1. The leaves of kohlrabi also contain valuable nutrients. The leaves sometimes contain even more nutrients than the tuber itself and must therefore be used in cooking. Compared to the tuber, the leaves have a vitamin C content that is about twice the content of beta-carotene (which is converted into vitamin A in the body)

Health Benefits of Kohlrabi

  1. Kohlrabi has a high health value. Rich in selenium, it can strengthen the immune system and prevent flu and colds. It is an iron-rich vegetable and therefore contributes to good oxygen transport in the body. The fiber it contains has a positive effect on digestive problems. It stimulates gastrointestinal activity and can cause bloating

Growing and harvesting kohlrabi

  1. Kohlrabi is a spring vegetable. It is a biennial plant that flowers the second year and withstands severe frost. To plant kohlrabi, a sunny to partially shaded location and humus-rich soil will suffice. From March you can already sow the plant in the cold container or inside on the windowsill. It can be sown directly in the garden in rows from mid-May. The first kohlrabi can be harvested together in March or early April from mid / late June (about 8 to 12 weeks growth period). It is especially important for the growing phase that the soil is kept evenly moist but not too wet.
