Nipple eczema: dry, scaly patches of skin nipple-areola

  1. Nipple eczema is an annoying complaint. A skin condition such as eczema can occur on the nipple and areola in pregnant and nursing women. Dry, flaky patches of skin on or around both nipples are visible: crusts on the nipple or around the nipple. Treatment is similar to eczema on other parts of the body. This consists of class II corticosteroid, topically for up to three weeks. If there is no improvement within three weeks, Paget's disease should be considered. This is a rare form of breast cancer. In case of persistent or worsening complaints, see a doctor.

Ecema on nipple and areola

  1. Nipple eczema manifests as a well-defined erythematous rash, which may be accompanied by dry and scaly or wet blisters. Eczema of the nipple can persist and cause intense itching. Scratching damages the nipple and areola (areola) and skin thickening (lichenification) can occur. Nipple eczema is often seen as part of atopic eczema

Who gets nipple eczema?

  1. Nipple eczema can occur in anyone as a solitary condition, but is common in individuals with current or previous eczema elsewhere. Nipple eczema is usually diagnosed in female adolescents regardless of previous history of atopic eczema, but it can also occur in infants, children and older men and women. Nipple eczema can sometimes occur in non-atopic breastfeeding women

Causes of nipple eczema

  1. Nipple eczema is due to genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. It occurs in the context of different types of eczema, mainly atopic eczema and contact eczema

Symptoms: dry, flaky or wet skin

  1. Women with nipple eczema suffer from an itchy erythematosquamous (red scaling and dry nipples) to wet or crusting (crusty) rash on the nipples and areola of one or both breasts. Usually the skin abnormality occurs on both sides. Scratching damages and thickens the nipple and areola. The woman may experience burning pain, especially while breastfeeding. Contact eczema may also develop in lactating women

Examination and diagnosis

  1. Interview and physical examination

Treatment of nipple eczema

  1. General measures

Complications of eczema on the nipple

  1. Secondary bacterial infection can occur as a result of fissures or fissures and diseased skin in nipple eczema. Colonization with Staphylococcus aureus can be further complicated with mastitis (inflammation of the breast) or breast abscess
