Postel Abbey: inspiration in green

  1. In the Kempen woods along the border between the Netherlands and Belgium you will find Postel Abbey. Here Norbertine brothers have sought inspiration in the beauty of divine existence for centuries. You can take a look at the grounds, buy cheese, herbs, beer and attend a service in the Romanesque church. But you can also stay overnight and get to know the way of life in this praying community.

Hospitality

  1. Postel and its surroundings are popular with tourists, who are free to enter the abbey grounds. The church at the back of the site is a parish church and the road to it is therefore public. But accessibility is also a form of hospitality. Just outside the gate is Gasthof de Beiaard, where you can find Postelbier and Abdijkaas

Guest Quarter

  1. If you turn left to the guest quarters and enter through the door, the peace, quiet and hospitable welcome of the real monastery await you. You can stay the night there, receive three meals a day plus the usual 'snack' in Belgium and pay a modest amount for it. "We do ask our guests to attend at least one service per day and to show respect for our way of life and the silence that reigns here," said Father Benny, who fulfills the role of guest father. "In this way we want to prevent people from only coming here on holiday and possibly disrupting our lives." The guest area

Church services

  1. Three times a day, at 6.45 am (morning office), 11.30 am (Eucharist; on Sunday at 10 am) and 6 pm (evening office), a service takes place in the beautiful sober church. The brothers sit in the choir, the parishioners and guests sit on chairs in front of the altar. There is more distance than when you also sit in the choir stalls as a guest. This allows you to attend the service more anonymously, which is nice for people who have not been raised Catholic and who do not know the rules. It is also nice to be in church between services

Walking

  1. If you stay as a guest for a few days, you can take beautiful walks in the area. Five circular walks start at the gate, varying in length from 3 to 13 kilometers. If you are looking for peace and quiet in the abbey, but you do not want to spend too much time alone, you can register for weeks and weekends for reflection. Usually a real retreat
