Safe and healthy pregnancy, how do you do that?

  1. When you are pregnant, it seems as if everyone around you suddenly knows exactly what to do and late to be pregnant healthy. The advice is flying around your ears and if you put everything together, it seems like you can do nothing at all for those nine months without harming your child. Fortunately, that is not the case and there is enough left that is very healthy for your baby!

Food and drink

  1. If you have to believe all the people around you, it seems like you are not allowed to eat or drink anything when you are pregnant. There are so many ghost stories going around that you would just get scared with every bite you put in your mouth. Fortunately, this is not necessary at all and there is enough left to enjoy, without your child running any risk! Nevertheless, it is of course important to be a bit more alert than before your pregnancy; because there are still foods that can pose a danger and it is better to leave them alone for the next nine months.

Toxoplasmosis

  1. One of the dangers that lurk lies in raw meat in particular. This is the Toxoplasmosis parasite, which can cause an infection after infection. When you get infected with this, you feel flu and unwell, but it doesn't do much harm for you. It's a different story for your baby; contamination with this infection can cause abnormalities in your baby or even lead to miscarriage. As an expectant mother, you obviously don't want to think about that, so in the coming months you can better leave snacks such as roast beef, filet américain, carpaccio or red steak. Raw ham and (red) smoked meat are allowed, they have been processed and are therefore safe. So always check with yourself whether it is processed meat that you buy or whether it is a raw product. In case of the latter; do not!

Listeriosis

  1. In addition to the Toxoplasmosis parasite, raw meat can contain another pathogen: the Listeria bacteria. Infection with the bacteria causes Listeriosis, an infection that can lead to miscarriage or premature birth. When you are infected with the Listeria bacteria, you feel ill and you suffer from flu symptoms. Again this is not very dangerous for you, but even more so for your baby! In addition to raw meat, you will find the bacteria on many other raw products, such as raw vegetables and raw vegetables, in raw (unpasteurized) milk and in raw milk cheeses. Fortunately, we in the Netherlands hardly know any raw milk anymore, or you have to drink the milk directly from the cow. The milk and other dairy products you buy at the store are all pasteurized, which killed the Listeria bacteria.

Other Don'ts When Pregnant

  1. In addition to the fact that raw products carry risks, there are other products that are better to eat or drink in less measure or even to avoid. For example, it is better to leave raw eggs during your pregnancy, because of Salmonella. Liver products contain a lot of vitamin A, which is harmful to your baby in large quantities. A little bit of liver pate or liver sausage - for example, a sandwich a day - will in principle not hurt, but eat liver products in moderation. Too much vitamin A increases the risk of an abnormality in your baby, for example a cleft palate.
