Scombroid fish poisoning: Symptoms after eating infected fish

  1. Scombroid poisoning (scombroid poisoning or histamine intoxication) is a form of food poisoning caused by humans ingesting contaminated fish. Improper storage or processing of the fish causes bacteria to enter the fish and produce a toxin (poison). Taking this contaminated food leads to all kinds of mild complaints such as sweating, a burnt mouth and throat, diarrhea and nausea. The symptoms appear soon after ingestion, but in most cases they disappear after a few hours. No treatment is necessary, but supportive and symptomatic treatment is possible.

Causes: Improperly processed or stored fish with a lot of histamine

  1. Scombroid fish poisoning is a form of food poisoning. The condition is caused by the action of bacteria such as Proteus morgani and Klebsiella pneumoniae, among others.

Scombroid poisoning is not an allergy

  1. Allergic reactions

Symptoms after eating contaminated fish

  1. The incubation period between acquiring the bacterial infection and the onset of symptoms is on average thirty minutes. The disease is characterized by flushing, headache, itching, hives, fever, heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness, burning of the mouth and throat, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Serious reactions are shortness of breath, bronchospasm (muscle spasms in the windpipe with breathlessness), swelling of the tongue (macroglossia), a drop in blood pressure (hypotension), cardiac arrhythmias and wheezing (stridor)

Treatment of scombroid fish poisoning

  1. Any treatment for scombroid fish poisoning is symptomatic and supportive. Antihistamines (medicines to treat an allergic reaction) relieve symptoms. If the symptoms are severe or the patient has ingested large amounts of contaminated food, it is sometimes helpful to first give charcoal (antidote) by mouth. Some doctors prefer to empty the stomach before administering the charcoal. In addition, intravenous (through a vein) fluid administration is sometimes necessary to prevent dehydration

Prognosis of mild disease

  1. The symptoms of scombroid fish poisoning are usually short-lived. In most patients the symptoms disappear within four hours, although in some patients the symptoms last up to a few days.
