Spoon leaf: tasty, healthy and healing

  1. Spoon leaf is a wild plant that occurs in the Netherlands, but is no longer as strongly represented in numbers than in the last century and before. The plant is therefore on the so-called 'red list' of increasingly rare plants. It is a plant that is also edible and actually very healthy for humans. Still, most people are not very familiar with this edible swamp plant and what the health aspects of spoon leaf are.

Spoon blade, the base

  1. Spoon leaf, officially Cochlearia, is a marsh plant from the finial family. There are about thirty species of plants, all of which fall within the spoon-leaf genus and have a high salt tolerance. This also makes the plants suitable for growing along the coastline. The plant has small white flowers with a greenish tinge and leaves with a bright green color. Spoon leaf grows to between 20 and a maximum of thirty centimeters.

Name confusion

  1. With spoon blade you often come across "real spoon blade" as a name. This has to do with the fact that there is also an English spoon blade. In appearance they are difficult to distinguish from each other. An emphatic difference is that the English spoon blade can thrive on even salty soil than the "real" spoon blade. The latter can also withstand frost much better.

Breed for consumption

  1. Besides the wild version, the plant is also cultivated for consumption. This takes place at a number of locations on the South and North Holland coast, including Noordwijk. The taste is spicy and slightly sharp. The taste is sometimes compared to watercress.

Health aspects

  1. Scurvy Spoon leaf is a source of vitamin C and that made it a much used part of the meal during the sea voyages to the east (VOC) around the golden age. This way, the well-known scurvy could be counteracted as much as possible. Incidentally, the English navigators used it for the same purpose.

Digestion

  1. Lepelblad is a stomach enhancer and is used for an optimally functioning digestive tract. If you already have problems with your digestion, it is good to regularly include spoon leaves in your meal. Another option is to drink it as a tea. For best results, brew a few cups of tea from the dried spoon blade every day.

Moisturizing

  1. Accumulated waste products in the body can indirectly cause inflammation. Regular intake of spoon leaves stimulates the removal of waste products from the body. As an extension of "cleaning up" of waste, it also stimulates the absorption of nutrients in the body.

Finally

  1. Spoon leaf is not well known, but that does not make the plant less effective for the body. Many people use fresh herbs for a meal and that is a good development. Add spoon leaf to this and it will be one of the additions for a tasty and healthy meal.
