Teflon pans are super easy. But be careful!

  1. It is wonderful for baking and roasting. These pans have a non-stick coating. But not everyone knows that this same layer is very bad for health. This also applies when the heating of the pan is so high that it starts to smoke. Then it is time for a mask because this smoke is really poisonous.

What an invention!

  1. The day was wonderful when the first frying pan was introduced with a special non-stick coating in which your omelette was not baked. Soon all shapes and sizes of these pans came onto the market and gourmet sets, poffertjes pans, sandwich makers, oven dishes and you name it, were provided with this special coating. Nothing has to fail and these pans can be found in every household. Never go back to those heavy and clumsy old-fashioned pans in which everything caked if you were not careful.

But… There are major drawbacks

  1. Most of us have of course noticed for a long time that damage occurs very quickly in the surface. And not everyone realizes that this is very unhealthy and that small particles of the coating end up in our food in this way. Even if you are so careful and you always use wooden spoons, you cannot prevent the wear out because these pans and pots wear out very quickly.

Toxic gases

  1. What many people don't know is that toxic gases are released during baking. You can notice this especially well if you have birds in the house. Birds have very small lungs and are very sensitive to poisonous gases in the house. During a party where the raclette grill is brought out, it is very possible that your sweet bird will die. Purely by poisoning!

What poisonous gases?

  1. When the pan (and therefore the coating) is subjected to heating, the pan becomes so hot within 2 to 5 minutes that it releases toxic substances that spread in the room and in the food. These are, for example, the substances: TFE. This substance can be carcinogenic. HFP: This substance causes liver disorders and weakens the immune system. TFA: can cause joint problems, contributes to osteoporosis, fatty liver and is stored up to 6x more, especially in babies. DFA: is especially toxic to the kidneys. MFA: is extremely toxic and causes an irregular heartbeat. PFOA: accumulates in the human body, is very bad for the environment because it does not break down and is even deadly for cows. SIF4: is especially toxic to the lungs / PFIB: toxic to the lungs. COF2: irritates the eyes, nose and ears and is also used as a weapon of war. HF: fatigue, irregular heartbeat, lethal in high dose and decreases calcium absorption. CF3COF: Disrupts heart rate, can cause unconsciousness and even death at high doses. C-8: is carcinogenic. Also found in the blood of children.

Alternatives

  1. Fortunately, there are alternatives for those who want to be on the safe side. An example of this is the "Scanpan". The Scanpan is a titanium pan from Denmark without a Teflon coating. And then there is also the "Greenpan". Also a pan that does not release harmful substances at high temperatures. The pan also has a non-stick coating and high scratch resistance. The disadvantage of these pans is that they are quite pricey. But what is your health worth to you?

Finally

  1. As mentioned, it is certainly not only the pots and pans from Du Pont or the Teflon brand that have this coating. You can certainly say that all pans or appliances with a non-stick coating carry the same risks as those of Du Pont.
