The healing power of Acerola or West Indian cherry

  1. Acerola is one of the healthiest fruits in the world because it contains a lot of vitamin C and polyphenols. It has medicinal properties against diabetes and cancer, among others. West Indian cherry is a shrub that originally grows in the north of South America and the Caribbean. It is not related to the cherry we know in Europe, nor to the nasturtium. The plant grows up to 6 meters high. The red-colored West Indian cherry is quite sour, but it quenches thirst well in the tropics. There are three seeds in each cherry. The flowers of this shrub are purple-magenta-pinkish.

Naming West Indian cherry

  1. The botanical name for this plant is Malpighia Puncifolia or Malpighia Emarginata. Puncifolia means 'point leaved'. It is called Malipighia because it is a family of the Malpighiaceae, a botanical plant family of which about 1000 species are members. In Dutch, the plant is best known under the name acerola. In Suriname

Vitamins acerola

  1. Acerola contains a lot of vitamin C and also quite a bit of vitamins A, B1 and B2. 100 grams of acerola contains 1864% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin C. That is a mega-large amount. It is not without reason that acerola is used for supplements. The other RDA percentages are more modest. Vitamin A is in it with 26% of the RDI. Pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 is contained in West Indian cherry with 6% of the RDI. Furthermore, it contains 4.5% of the RDA riboflavin or B2. One ounce of acerola has 3.5% of the RDA of folic acid, also known in the Netherlands under the name B11 but in Belgium called B9. Other vitamins

Phytonutrients acerola

  1. Phytonutrients are nutritious components in plants. Acerola contains many polyphenol anthocyanidins such as chlorogenic acid, pelargonidin, malvidin, tannins, cyanidin-3-glycosides such as cyanidin-3-alpha-O-rhamnoside, quercetin and kaempferol. These nutrients make the West Indian cherry more antioxidant

Acerola against cancer

  1. It is an extensively researched fruit and the high percentages of polyphenols appear to be 100% safe. In addition, other studies show that the cherry has medicinal properties against diabetes or diabetes mellitus and cancer. The latter sounds incredible to many people: how can a plant have an anti-cancer effect while so many people die of cancer? Much of the answer lies in the fact that - although not superfluous - chemotherapy and radiation damage the DNA, thereby helping to cause cancer. Acerola repairs damaged DNA. That is why acerola is a great plant in a diet that supports chemotherapy

Tips for eating acerola

  1. Acerola can be eaten fresh, raw. For those who like sour it is a tasty, sour, super healthy snack. However, it is not nearly as sour as a lemon; that makes it a good snackable fruit. You can mix it with fruit smoothies. You can also do it with a salad; it gives the salad a fresh, sour taste, so you no longer need vinegar or lemon juice. Those who live in the tropics can choose to buy a lot of acerolates and make syrup, sauce or jam by boiling it with sugar, but preferably cane sugar. You can mix a pureed fruit with honey to make a fresh, uncooked sauce or topping. [! 180390 => 1130 = 6!] Tips for eating acerola
