The LQT syndrome

  1. The long QT time syndrome is a very rare, but also a serious condition. It is hereditary in principle, but it can also occur thanks to a mutation in the genes. Although LQT syndrome cannot be cured, if you know the type of LQT, you can try to prevent heart rhythm disturbances. In this way it can be partly kept under control.

LQT syndrome what is it?

  1. Some people sometimes say as an automatic comment "I was shocked to death", but this can actually happen if one suffers from LQTS syndrome. In Dutch it is also called the long QT time syndrome. LQTS is a hereditary condition. If someone in the family has it, the rest of the family may also be tested to see if it occurs in more than one person. There is a 1 in 2 chance that you will pass on LQTS, so the chances are quite high that you will pass it on.

Symptoms

  1. Actually, if it is not known in the family, there are relatively few symptoms at first. Yet it may be that the moment you find out it is a pretty violent way, because you can become unconscious or even die from it. Unfortunately, it often happens that the patient dies of an unexpected death before the syndrome was diagnosed.

What is happening?

  1. Thanks to electrically charged particles (ions) our heart keeps beating in a fixed rhythm. Thanks to this beating of the heart, the blood is pumped around the body. The QT time is the time in which the heart prepares to make a heartbeat again. In certain situations, the ions are disrupted, which also disrupts the rhythm, the result is that thanks to the uncontrolled and too fast beating the blood is no longer pumped.

Types

  1. There are different types, in the Netherlands only types 1, 2, 3 and 7 occur so far:

Treatment

  1. The patients visit the hospital regularly for a check-up. The LQT syndrome is diagnosed by means of heart films (ECG), heredity tests and exercise tests. Unfortunately, the LQT syndrome cannot be cured, but attacks can be partially prevented. Almost all patients are prescribed beta blockers. These reduce the risk of a stop of the heart. Patients with multiple occurrences of unconsciousness or who have already had a heart attack are given a defibrillator or pacemaker. These keep the rhythm in order.

Prevention is better than cure

  1. Since curing the LQT syndrome is not yet an option, as soon as you know that you have the LQT syndrome, you may be able to adjust your life accordingly. Since it often occurs with tension, strong emotions, unexpected events or changes in the body (from a warm to a cold pool, for example), you can try to avoid these situations. The tricky part is that it is difficult to estimate where the boundary is.
