Tips to avoid motion sickness

Nausea until you reach your destination: it can really spoil your holiday fun! Three out of four people have ever been motion sick. Fortunately, there are ways and means to avoid a bad trip. Or at least to be less bothered by it.

Some people seem more susceptible to motion sickness than others. These are usually children, and more often women than men. As you get older, you usually experience less motion sickness, but you can also have it throughout your life.
Motion sickness

The best known, and often the most extreme form of motion sickness is seasickness. The rocking motion of the boat makes you dull at first. Then you yawn, sweat and get nauseous. This often ends with vomiting and a bad feeling. Besides at sea, this can also happen in the plane, car, bus or train. Then it is called air sickness or motion sickness. Some people also suffer from it in a (fast) lift, playground, amusement park or fairground attraction. Then it is also called motion sickness.

Whether you have motion sickness is a matter of predisposition. It is clear that it has something to do with your vestibular system. In children, where the balance is not yet fully developed, it occurs much more often than in adults. You get motion sickness because you, through your body and balance organ, feel all kinds of movements that do not match what you see. Your brain can't combine that well and that's why you get nauseous.
What can you do about motion sickness?

Motion sickness is very annoying. The only good thing is that it passes as soon as the trip is over. But of course you would rather go on holiday without a bad trip. The question then is what you can do about motion sickness. To start, make sure you are sufficiently rested and fit. Also watch your food and drinks. Eat light meals, but certainly not too many. Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks. Do not eat fatty or acidic foods. Sweets in moderation. Do not have coffee before and during the trip. It can make a big difference where you sit. Rather sit in the front of the car; the risk of motion sickness is greatest in the back. If possible, get behind the wheel in the car. Drivers are less prone to motion sickness because they see movements coming. When you fly, make sure you have a place near the wings, here you will be less nauseous. On a ship, look for the center, there is the least movement.

Children should sit high enough so that they can see out. Take frequent breaks and get outdoors when traveling by car. Avoid smoking and (perfume) smells. Do not brake or accelerate too much with the car.

Home Remedies

Besides regular medicines, there are also many home remedies. Some people put ear plugs or patches behind the ears. Others swear by sunglasses on the trip or start with homeopathic medicines the day before the trip. What is known is that ginger (powder) can help against motion sickness. This is also sold in capsule form.
Travel sickness medicines

Do you still suffer from motion sickness despite all measures? You can get medicines from the pharmacy. Which means you choose depends on which means works for you personally, the travel conditions and the duration of the trip. Cinnarizine and meclozine tablets prevent nausea and vomiting, but can affect your reaction time. Therefore do not use when driving the car
