Traveler's diarrhea: oatmeal with water, the solution!

  1. Almost everyone will have to deal with it in their life: traveler's diarrhea. Travelers' diarrhea is really just diarrhea, but then diarrhea that you get on vacation and often because you are on vacation. Usually this is due to a virus that you catch or food poisoning. Diarrhea is something that nobody wants on their holiday, because it is difficult to estimate how often and when you have to go to the toilet and in fact; whether there is a toilet.

Traveler's Diarrhea

  1. Traveler's diarrhea is thin / watery stools (diarrhea) that you get while traveling. You can get traveler's diarrhea in all countries. Most often, however, this occurs in warm countries and in unsanitary conditions. It usually consists of food or drink that is contaminated with bacteria. The people who live in that country do not suffer from those bacteria, it is normal for them and their bodies are used to it.

Pharmacy

  1. At a pharmacy in the country where you are, you can often get several remedies that you can take to stop the diarrhea. For example, a well-known drug is Loperamide. However, you should not take loperamide when there is blood in the stool or when there is a (high) fever. Unfortunately, this is not always the solution.

The solution: oatmeal with water

  1. For many, the solution will be to eat oatmeal with water. Oatmeal is a fiber soluble in water. The fibers can therefore be easily digested by the intestines. As a result, no fibers will remain. The oatmeal can therefore be easily absorbed. Oatmeal also contains important B vitamins, various amino acids, calcium, magnesium, silicon, iron, zinc and fiber. So you get a lot of healthy substances and because your body does not immediately 'flush' the oatmeal, your body has the time to absorb those substances. Oats contain the best protein of all grains. This aids in growth and recovery and is seen as a boost to the immune system. Since travelers' diarrhea often involves an (intestinal) infection, oatmeal is a good boost to possibly fight the infection / virus.

Method of preparation: yes, that's really important!

  1. It is often recommended abroad to drink bottled water. This is especially important when you have diarrhea. So buy water from a bottle, boil the water first and then add the oatmeal. You really have to let the oatmeal 'soak' in the water for a while. Add the oatmeal (60g / 6 tablespoons) to the boiling water (250ml) and let it soak for at least 10 minutes. This makes the oatmeal extra soluble and digestible for your body. Your intestines do not have to work much to absorb the substances and there is therefore a good chance that you will not get diarrhea right away.
