Why you should eat cherries regularly

  1. It's cherry time! In the summer months, Dutch cherries are widely available from cherry growers and supermarkets. Do you love cherries? Good news, they are not only tasty but also healthy.

  1. Cherries contain a lot of vitamins A and C and the mineral potassium. This mineral has a blood pressure lowering effect and protects against cardiac arrhythmias. Potassium also ensures - together with sodium - that nerve impulses are properly conducted and muscles contract. In addition, there is also beta-carotene in cherries. Beta-carotene is a provitamin A and is converted by the body into vitamin A. This makes it important for resistance and vision, but also contributes to healthy bones, teeth and skin and growth.

Low calories

  1. People who are on a diet can also eat a bowl of cherries with confidence. Fruit is often thought to make you fat, but cherries are low in calories. A container with 200 grams of cherries contains about 108 kilocalories. Responsible as a snack!

Buy and keep

  1. Cherries are a summer fruit. They are often available as early as June, but they are at their best in July and August. For taste, it is best to keep them uncovered in a cool place. They can then be kept for about one to two days. In the fridge you can keep them a little longer, about three to five days.

Washing

  1. Always wash cherries under running water before eating them. As with any fruit, there can be harmful bacteria or viruses on cherries.

Cherry stone

  1. Eat the cherries without the stone. The kernels of cherries can contain hydrocyanic acid. That's another word for cyanide. This toxic substance is released when you chew or grind a kernel. The advice is therefore not to swallow the seeds of cherries. But should it happen accidentally, it can't hurt right away. To make jam, compote or pastry, you also have to stone the cherries first.
