A slice of ham, salami, some spread sausage, chicken fillet, filet americain: many people love cold cuts on their bread. But how healthy are they actually?

Think, for example, of real jambon from the Ardennes, prosciutto from Italy, Schinken from Germany and jamón from Spain. You can enjoy it, of course, but it is good to know a few things about meat products.

Meat products are products made from meat (beef, chicken, veal or pork) that have been processed in a factory. Your slice of ham is custom-made, but also dried or smoked, packed, and mainly because of the shelf life, substances are added to it. Examples are dextrose, nitrate and nitrite. Many such additives have E numbers. According to the EU, these substances are safe. Furthermore, a lot of salt is often added to meat, which is not good for your blood pressure.
