Are meat products unhealthy?

  1. A slice of ham, salami, some spread sausage, chicken fillet, filet americain: many people love cold cuts on their bread. But how healthy are they actually?

  1. Not only in the Netherlands, but certainly also in other countries, meat products can be a true delicacy. Think, for example, of real jambon from the Ardennes, prosciutto from Italy, Schinken from Germany and jamón from Spain. You can enjoy it, of course, but it is good to know a few things about meat products.

Meat + processing = meat products

  1. Meat products are products made from meat (beef, chicken, veal or pork) that have been processed in a factory. Your slice of ham is custom-made, but also dried or smoked, packed, and mainly because of the shelf life, substances are added to it. Examples are dextrose, nitrate and nitrite. Many such additives have E numbers. According to the EU, these substances are safe. Furthermore, a lot of salt is often added to meat, which is not good for your blood pressure. As if it weren't enough, meat naturally contains saturated fats, which are also not good for your health. The general advice for red meat (that is all meat except chicken and turkey) is that you can eat a maximum of 500 grams per person per week, including meat products. [! 131189 => 1130 = 3!] Variation is the magic word

  1. Is there nothing good about meat products? Yes, because in addition to being tasty, they also provide much-needed protein, iron and vitamins A, B1, B2 and B12. How should you deal with meat products? Basically the same as with all your food: not too much and vary. So variation is the magic word, here too. Vary with all your toppings anyway, so alternate savory with sweet. But also ensure variation within your savory sandwich filling, and preferably choose the lean variants of meat products. The lean meat products contain less saturated fat, and at the same time fewer calories.

Wise choices

Children and pregnant women

  1. In addition, there are some specific advice for children and pregnant women. Children should not eat too much liver sausage and spreadable liver sausage, because of the vitamin A contained therein, which can be harmful in large quantities. The following applies: Children from 6 months to 1 year: do not take more than 1 to 2 sandwiches with (spread) liverwurst per week. Children from 1 to 3 years: do not take more than 2 to 3 sandwiches with (spread) liverwurst per week. Children from 4 to 12 years: take a maximum of 1 sandwich with (spread) liver sausage per day. Pregnant women should also be careful with (spread) liver sausage, but also (partially or completely) raw meat products such as filet americain, beef sausage, salami, carpaccio and tartare. This is because of the listeria bacteria and the disease toxoplasmosis. Both can be harmful to the unborn child.

Finally, what exactly is contained in 100 grams of meat products?
