Cliniclowns, hospital clowns

  1. Cliniclowns is an organization consisting of paid staff and volunteers. A cliniclown is a clown who visits children with a serious illness in the hospital and puts on a show here, so that the child no longer has to think about the pain and fear. Because both the hospital and the children count on the cliniclowns, they consist of a team of permanent and permanent clowns, who are active at least three half days a week.

Where are they active

  1. The cliniclowns are not active in many countries. In addition to our cliniclowns in Belgium, America, Germany and the Netherlands also have their own clowns. The cliniclowns are limited in number. America has the largest number, there are 55 clowns in their team. In Belgium there are 15 clowns, which is actually quite a lot, since Belgium is only a small country.

What financial support do they have

  1. Cliniclowns has its own ambassadors. This means that these people work for cliniclowns, but this is completely free, because they think it is important that sick children are also changed their minds. They do presentations and the like at schools and in companies to introduce more people to the cliniclowns. Some well-known names are eg. Leen Demaré and Gene Bervoets, who can call themselves godparents of the organization. In addition, many other famous people show their good heart with names such as Wendy Van Wanten, Koen Crucke, Axel Daeseleire and many others.

How did they originate

  1. The cliniclowns were created about 40 years ago. There was an American Patch Adams who was studying to be a doctor and he noticed that patients got better not only from drugs and surgery, but also from love and attention. He did it differently from the other doctors. Today, Patch Adams is still doing this job in clown clothes.

The emergence of cliniclowns in Belgium

  1. On February 1, 1994, 2 clowns started (5 half days a week) in 2 hospitals. Because some doctors were still skeptical and uncertain about the idea of 'cliniclown', it was agreed to evaluate the project after 1 year. Only with a positive evaluation would the effect be continued. Before the year had passed, the organization was told the verdict was positive.

Training

  1. Being a clown is a demanding job both emotionally and creatively. Hence their selections are quite strict. The first step is to evaluate the cover letters based on education and experience (you must be at least 18 years old). You must be psychologically or pedagogically trained and have experience in improvisation and / or clowning. The selected candidates are invited to a selection day. This day consists of improvisation and clowning exercises and a motivation interview. If the candidate receives positive comments, he / she will have a training of 3 months, after which he will be re-evaluated. After that, he may or may not receive a 3-month trial contract. In this trial period, the new clowns will expand their knowledge.

Working method and method

  1. When the children receive a visit of about 10 minutes from the cliniclowns, this is a distraction for them that ensures that they are less tense and thus effectively experience less pain. Before the visit, the clowns collect information such as the name of the child, the language they speak, how sick they are, etc. Then they visit the child individually in the room. They approach the child carefully, sense whether their visit is desirable and then turn into an improvised game.

Cliniclowns, now also online

  1. Recently, the children can also come into contact with the clowns online, but this is for the time being for the children from the Netherlands. When they surf to villaneuzenroode.nl, they end up in a house where all cliniclowns live together. Here they can chat with their favorite cliniclown and see it via a webcam. This way they can play hide and seek together, or just talk about what happened that day.

How does the environment react?

  1. Everyone responds positively, not only the children but also the parents and the hospital staff. Of course, every visit first looks at the state of the child and the will of the parents, because when the child feels too sick or too weak, or the parents for some reason do not give permission, the visit will go not trough.

  2. Everyone responds positively, not only the children but also the parents and hospital staff. Of course, every visit first gets crazy
