“Eat this one superfood every day!”

  1. Do you want to live to be a hundred years old? Are you trying to make your skin glow like it did when you were eighteen? Do you want to keep your brain healthy and prevent Alzheimer's? Or do you want to cure cancer just by changing your diet?

  1. The internet always has a solution for that. Eat avocados every day! Drink wheatgrass daily! Stir a spoonful of chia seeds into your coconut yogurt every morning! But how much sense does it make sense to put a superfood on the menu every day? We'll discuss it in this blog!

The lure of superfoods

  1. Superfoods have become an indispensable part of our diet after a few years. How come these kinds of products are so popular? Very simple: we all secretly want to find a â € œquick fixâ € for our health. Because wouldn't it be nice if one perfect superfood is enough for you to function optimally?

  1. Especially in an age where everything is getting faster and easier, this temptation makes sense. If you can cure an inflammation or condition with some pills, why not a bad diet? But unfortunately: nutrition is just a bit more complicated than that.

Eat a superfood every day?

  1. Unfortunately, people still eagerly respond to that need. The idea that you should eat certain products every day is everywhere. Eat an avocado daily! A green smoothie! A bowl of oatmeal! One glass of red wine and 20 grams of dark chocolate!

  1. But how much value should you attach to this kind of advice? We can be very brief about that: you can take them with a good grain of salt. No matter how healthy something is, you don't have to do anything every day. And there are many reasons for this!

  1. For starters, you can always eat too much of a good thing. Many products are very good for you in moderate amounts, but become unhealthy in larger portions. Sometimes precisely because of the same quality that made them so healthy to begin with!

  1. Linseed, for example, contains an enormous amount of fiber - but if you eat too much of it, it will upset your intestines. Avocado, nuts and fatty fish contain healthy fats, but they provide too many calories in large quantities. More examples can be found in this previous blog.

  1. In addition, a strict â € superfood regimeâ € ™ can damage the variation in your diet. And that is a shame, because variation is number one when it comes to a healthy diet. By eating a little bit of everything, you ensure that you get as many health benefits as possible.

  1. Do you eat the same bowl of oatmeal every day? Then you miss the benefits of other breakfasts. Spinach and broccoli every day? A different vegetable every now and then is also very healthy! In short, too much of one can lead to too little of the other.

  1. Worse still: sometimes you give up that variation for nothing. Many so-called superfoods have never been proven to actually deliver so many benefits. Fine, they contain a lot of a specific substance - but they often make too beautiful claims, without any scientific evidence.

  1. The truth is, your body is a complicated machine. We are far from figuring out which fabric exactly has which functions. Moreover, it is rarely the case that one substance is responsible for an entire process. Precisely because the interaction between nutrients is so important, it often doesn't work to focus on one superfood.

  1. Finally, it is of little use to consider nutrition as the sum of individual superfoods. Have you had your spoonful of chia seeds today? And your handful of walnuts? You're not doing yourself and your appetite for food by making it some sort of checklist that you have to work through every day.

How should it be done?

  1. How can you avoid all these problems and still eat healthy? The easiest way is to think more in food categories than in individual products. So: you don't necessarily have to eat spinach, as long as you eat vegetables. And you can do that very differently every day, so that the variation automatically remains in order.

  1. Do you choose some animal and vegetable proteins, a lot of fruit and vegetables, whole grain carbohydrates and some healthy fats every day? With something unhealthy as a treat every now and then, but not too often? Then you are actually in the right place quickly. No need to plan which superfood should be on the menu every day, so!

  2. Do you choose some animal and vegetable proteins, a lot of fruit and vegetables, whole grain carbohydrates and some healthy fats every day? With the occasional unhealthy treat, but not too often
