Everyday Ailments: Healing Drinks

  1. Sometimes it is not necessary to immediately go to the pills and drinks from the pharmacy, but products that you have at home or get in the supermarket are sufficient. Here is an overview of simple and cheap drinks that you can make yourself against constipation, diarrhea, cough, colds, mouth ulcers, flatulence, nausea and to stimulate appetite.

Constipation

  1. Constipation, or constipation, is constipation, where there is a delayed or difficult bowel movement. It occurs in about 15% of the population. This occurs with a narrowing or paralysis of the bowel (muscles), due to dehydration of the stool, when insufficient fiber is eaten, but can also occur during pregnancy. It is very important to eat enough fiber (eg fruit, brown rice and whole grain products). It also works to drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day and get enough exercise.

Diarrhea

  1. With diarrhea, or diarrhea, the stool is thin, pulpy or watery, requiring constant use of the toilet (sometimes three or more times a day). This may be due to infections, such as a viral infection (stomach flu) or bacterial infections (for example Salmonella). Poor food hygiene can also be a cause, as can the use of too much alcohol, too much anxiety and stress and immunosupression (for example in AIDS). In young children it can be caused by teething or molars, or by using too much soda.

Cough

  1. When coughing, an exhalation actually takes place that is explosive and reflexive. It is the body's way of cleaning the airways of mucus and dirt. It usually occurs as a symptom of another condition (such as a cold or flu). When coughing, a cough drink can be obtained from the pharmacy, but a good herbal drink also works:

Colds

  1. A cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) by a virus. For example, coughing can occur, but also a stuffy nose, sore throat, headache, sneezing and fatigue. After the cold, you are immune to that particular virus for life, but unfortunately there are many types of viruses. Colds occur mainly in winter and in cold and rainy weather. There may also be a link with obesity. When you have a cold, it is important to get enough vitamins.

Canker sores

  1. An ulcer is a gray-white sore in the mouth of 5-10 mm that causes pain. It is mainly found on the gums, palate and cheek mucosa, but sometimes also on the tongue. Canker sores are common and almost everyone has had them at some point. Causes could be: injury of the mouth, quitting smoking, hypersensitivity to certain food (components), but also fear and stress. It can also be caused by toothpaste (according to some studies).

Flatulence

  1. Flatulence, also called flatulence, is caused by swallowing breath or carbon dioxide. The gas has to leave the body somehow, through a bur or a fart. In principle, oxygen or carbon dioxide and the like are odorless; the odors are caused by other components, such as sulfur compounds.

Nausea

  1. Nausea is the discomfort in the stomach, often accompanied by a tendency to vomit. It is often a symptom of a disorder, with stress, a lot of alcohol use, but also with pregnancy and overeating. It can also be part of a disease and drugs associated with it, such as chemotherapy and anti-depressants.

Appetite stimulation

  1. If you find it difficult to bring yourself to eat, for example at breakfast, there are also options. In cancer, the appetite may also have decreased, or in the elderly the desire to eat is often also lower. In these cases, something is needed to stimulate the appetite. This can be done by adding variety to the meals (for example sweet versus savory, warm versus cold). It also works to take sour dishes like below:
