This condition in popcorn manufacturers first came to light when 8 former popcorn factory employees developed obliterative bronchiolitis. In 2000, an investigation was conducted into the cause and safety measures were instituted for employees. Because of this story the disease was called obliterative bronchiolitis "popcorn lungs."

In 2007, an American patient was first diagnosed with the disease who did not work in a popcorn factory, but developed the disease from over-consumption of microwave popcorn.
