Review: Koupe Protein Ice. Healthy ice cream or not?

  1. It might be the unhealthy snack we all sin with at some point: ice cream. Few things are healthier than a big tub of creamy, sugary vanilla or chocolate ice cream. It is a pity that that stuff is just pretty unhealthy. For most people, ice cream is thus one of the products they practically never eat again.

  1. Luckily that may now change! A new product has recently been introduced in Dutch supermarkets: Koupe Protein Ice. The idea behind the ice cream is very simple: just delicious ice cream, but healthier. How much is actually true of that claim? And does the result taste like something? In this blog we will discuss exactly what you can expect from Koupe.

What is Koupe Protein Ice?

  1. Koupe is, as the name suggests, ice cream with more protein. However, it would be too simplistic to leave it at that. It is not just your standard ice cream with a scoop of protein powder in it. Koupe puts it this way: “A portion of Koupe contains less sugar than an apple, more protein than 3 proteins and more fiber than a portion of broccoli.” That's quite a statement!

Nutritional value Koupe Protein Ice

  1. The above quote naturally creates high expectations for the nutritional value of the ice cream. And that is not entirely unjustified! Compared to other well-known brands, Koupe scores very well when you look at the macros. For example, it contains only half the calories you will find in Magnum ice cream.

  1. In terms of proteins, it is completely the other way around: Koupe supplies no less than three to four times as much protein as other brands, 13.3 grams per 100 grams. And the fiber is also good: 7.5 grams instead of, for example, Häagen-Dazs or Ben Jerry's, which contain no fiber.

  1. To complete the picture, it contains less sugars and fats. The 3.1 grams of fat is about one-sixth that of other brands. And most of the 8 grams of sugar comes from the fruit - unlike, say, Magnum's 27 grams.

  1. Section: 158 kcal | 13.3 grams of protein | 7.5 grams of fiber | 3.1 grams of fat | 8 grams of sugar

  1. Häagen-Dazs: 270Â kcal | 4 grams of protein | 0 grams of fiber | 17 grams of fat | 23 grams of sugar

  1. Ben Jerry's: Â 230 kcal | 4 grams of protein | 0 grams of fiber | 14 grams of fat | 20 grams of sugar

  1. Magnum: 300 kcal | 3.5 grams of protein | 1.5 grams of fiber | 19 grams of fat | 27 grams of sugar

What's in Koupe Protein Ice?

  1. The question is of course: how does Koupe manage to make such ice cream? One of the most important tricks is to omit the whipped cream from the recipe. Instead, whole milk is used as a base: still nice and creamy, but a lot less fat.

  1. To make things creamy enough, whey is used instead of fat. A smart choice, because it is incredibly rich in proteins! It is not without reason that whey protein powder is also made from it.

  1. However, sweeteners have been added to the ice cream. There is still much debate about the effect of sweeteners on health. However, this should not pose a problem to a limited extent. How Koupe further succeeded in giving the ice the right soft structure, that is unfortunately a trade secret.

How does Koupe Protein Ice taste?

  1. An important question is: is the result a bit successful in terms of taste? And it sure is! Anyone who tastes Koupe Protein Ice certainly does not have the idea that it is a healthier type of ice cream. The taste is nice and full, and absolutely not chemical or boring, as you might expect.

  1. The structure has also been successful. The ice does not harden in the freezer, as is often the case with ice cream with less fat. The experts are also enthusiastic about this new product. At the World Diary Innovations Award of 2016, Koupe has won the Best Ice Cream prize. Quite an achievement for such a young brand!

For daily consumption?

  1. The next question is of course: is Koupe Protein Ice really healthy enough to eat it regularly? For example, could you take it daily for dessert? It's not that easy. The ice still contains sugars, sweeteners and calories. Nevertheless, it is a healthier alternative compared to other ice creams.

  1. A small scoop per day should be possible. The problem is that people would rather want more if they already eat it anyway. In that case it is of course not very wise to get rid of a bowl every day. So always keep an eye on the rest of your daily menu to see if you are getting the correct macros in total!

Where can you buy Koupe Protein Ice?

  1. Are you an ice cream lover and would you like to try Koupe Protein Ice? At the moment it is for sale at several supermarkets such as Jumo, Dirk and Albert Heijn.

Make your own ice cream

  1. By the way, this is a good time to mention that making healthy ice cream yourself is also a great option. That is a lot cheaper than Koupe, which is quite expensive at around € 5 per 500 ml. Moreover, you can also go a long way with a scoop of protein powder. We've already published some delicious recipes for making your own ice cream on our blog.

  1. For example, you can choose this protein-rich frozen yogurt, or simple banana ice cream with which you can vary endlessly. And Greek yogurt ice cream bars, of course, if you're looking for a tasty summer snack. Enough possibilities anyway!
