The importance of sports and exercise (diabetes)
-
It is only recently that a number of qualitative studies have confirmed the importance of regular exercise and sport for people with (risk of) diabetes. The Benefits of Physical Activity
-
The benefits of physical activity on people already suffering from the disease are also not wrong: immediate and long-lasting improvement in the effect that insulin has in the body. That's not what a diabetic needs. The best result would be achieved by a combination of aerobics and strength training according to various scientific studies.

That's almost 10% of the population! And we're only talking about people diagnosed with the disease, an unknown number of people have the disease without realizing it. The group of people with so-called 'pre-diabetes' is even larger. People who do not yet have the disease but are at a very high risk of developing it. Do you need even more motivation to start paying attention to that diet and to exercise a little more?
-
Research has shown just the opposite, however, people with (pre-) diabetes appear to exercise less than the rest of the population. And we're not just talking about sports. Exercise, if done in the right way and with proper guidance, can of course be healthy. But more and more doctors are stressing that regular, moderate exercise is more important than showing off once a week in the gym or on the football field.

Making that daily trip to work by bike or on foot is just as good or maybe even better than taking out a subscription to a fitness center where you, let's face it, due to lack of time will make too little use of it anyway. It is of course best to combine the two. Regular exercise combined with a training program for strengthening certain groups of muscles (especially cardio training).

Always consult the doctor
-
Consult with your doctor if you are unsure if your body is ready to exercise. As with everyone else, the advice applies to diabetes sufferers to start slowly and to build up step by step. But in general, science is in agreement that most people with type 2 diabetes can exercise safely with the necessary precautions. Until a few years ago, organizations warned for diabetics that it was better not to do strenuous strength training . This was not really based on scientific facts.

In the meantime, they have changed their position and, for example, the American Diabetes Association recommends that its members engage in 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week. The exercises they propose are a combination of aerobics (swimming, walking, cycling), weight training (with weights or stretch bands) and warm-up exercises to make the muscles flexible.
