What does the color of fruit and vegetables say?

  1. Everyone knows the advice to put many different colors on your plate. As simple as it sounds, that's certainly good advice! Colors indicate certain nutrients, and specific colors are really linked to certain substances.

  1. The more variety in color, the more different nutrients you get in, in short. But do you also know what the color of fruit and vegetables says exactly? In today's blog we give you an overview with which you can move forward with the greengrocer from now on!

Color of fruit and vegetables

  1. Green is healthy, you often hear. Not an empty statement, because that fresh color does indeed indicate the presence of all kinds of particularly useful nutrients. The main coloring agent is chlorophyll, which is also called leaf green. The name even comes from the Greek word for green, chloros!

  1. Chlorophyll is protective for your body, because it forms a kind of layer in your intestines. It may also support the immune system and has a positive effect on the oxygen level in your blood. Finally, chlorophyll makes your body more basic - which means it makes your organs function better.

  1. The color yellow indicates the presence of the mineral potassium in your food. And that's good news, because potassium is a mineral that many people eat too little of. Along with sodium - or salt - it regulates your blood pressure. However, because we eat way too much salt in the Netherlands, that balance is often seriously disrupted. You can counteract this with yellow fruit!

  1. Honeydew melon and banana in particular are known for their high potassium content. Bananas are also full of vitamin B6, a substance that improves the effect of potassium.

  1. The idea that carrots are good for the eyes is a myth from World War II. The English brought it into circulation to explain the accuracy of their pilots, so that the invention of the radar would not be known. However, that does not mean that there is no truth in it.

  1. Orange fruit and vegetables are full of carotenoids, including beta-carotene. This is converted into vitamin A in the body, which is essential for good vision. It also improves resistance and impact strength. Every reason to eat more pumpkin, orange and mango, so!

  1. Did you know that oncologists recommend that you eat berries and tomatoes to prevent cancer? This is not without reason: red foods contain lycopene. This not only protects against cancer - especially in the prostate - but also against cardiovascular disease.

  1. Red fruits, such as berries, strawberries, pomegranates and raspberries, are also packed with ellagic acid. That substance also protects against cancer! All the more reason to show off some more red, in other words!

  1. The dyes in dark blue and purple fruits are called anthocyanins. They not only give blueberries, beets and red cabbage that beautiful deep color, but also act as powerful antioxidants.

  1. That means that a handful of blueberries helps you to eliminate free radicals in your body. In this way you prevent cell damage and all the problems that follow. Plus, anthocyanins keep your brain healthy, especially your cognitive ability.

  1. Finally, there are white foods. Think for example of onion and garlic, but also vegetables such as cauliflower, leek and parsnip. Even mushrooms fall into this group. The white color indicates the presence of allicin, a natural antibiotic that also lowers blood pressure. The absence of color does not mean that these vegetables are any less healthy than their colored relatives!

So the absence of color in no way means that these vegetables are any less healthy than their colored relatives!
