What is clarified butter and is it healthy?

If you are a regular visitor to our blog, then you have certainly noticed while reading that your body desperately needs healthy fats. No wonder that different oils and fats are gaining more and more attention! Are you already familiar with clarified butter? This liquid gold is making a real comeback! What is it? What can you do with it? And not unimportantly: is clarified butter healthy?

The use of clarified butter is anything but new. Our ancestors were already quite busy with it. The reason was mainly practical, because the refrigerator did not exist yet. By "clearing" the butter, it could be kept for much longer at room temperature. This is in contrast to regular butter, which turned rancid too quickly.
What is clarified butter?

The basis is cream butter which is then 'clarified': separating the remaining solid components (including proteins and milk particles) and water from the butterfats. This is done by heating the butter at a low temperature without letting it burn.

The water evaporates and the solids still present float to the top or sink to the bottom. After this, they can easily be scooped off or left behind when draining. What is left is butterfat.

Clarified butter is actually nothing more than pure fat. But not in a negative sense .... It is a type of fat that is naturally loosened and isolated from surrounding nutrients. The result is a very pure form of fats, without milk residues and yet packed with nutrients!

Difference between clarified butter and ghee

Maybe you have heard of ghee? This is a commonly used type of clarified butter from India. The two are often thought of as one and the same, but ghee (literally translated 'liquid gold') has a different preparation method and its own unique taste.

It is heated more extensively, so that the moisture content is even lower. In Indian and Pakistani cuisine, it is loved for its flavor and beneficial powers. Also here in the Netherlands it is available in more and more places.
Is clarified butter healthy?

After all we now know about clarified butter, we can only say that it has many unique and healthy properties. But this does not mean a license to add clarified butter everywhere from now on or to use extra large portions. You should never overdo the use of fats, because too much can be counterproductive and also provides an enormous amount of calories. So keep in mind…!
