Exercise every day: is it healthy?

  1. Sports are good for you, we all know that. Regular exercise will make you stronger, leaner and generally healthier. That actually applies to any form of sport, whether you are a fanatic fitnest or prefer swimming laps.

  1. But as with all healthy ideas, there is a limit here. There is also such a thing as exercising too much: that quickly leads to overtraining. But how much sport is too much? Is exercise every day healthy, or does it cross your boundaries? We'll discuss it in our blog today!

The benefits of sports

  1. It is not surprising that many people love sports. With enough exercise, you simply do your body a great favor. Some important benefits of exercising are, for example:

  1. There are many more plus points, but the idea is clear: exercise is good for you. But does that also mean that you should exercise as much as you can?

Daily exercise

  1. Some people are so enthusiastic about the many benefits that they exercise every day. The idea is then: sport is good, so more sport is better. Sounds logical? Unfortunately, there can also be some drawbacks if you work so fanatically.

  1. To what extent that is the case, however, depends a bit on what you understand by 'exercising every day'. A round of walking is quite a different story than an intensive full body strength training… To give more detailed information, we look at different measures of sport and movement below.

Strength training every day

  1. To start with: strength training. Of course, there is little more fun than seeing you progress. That is why starting strength athletes often hang out fanatically in the iron every day.

  1. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily better for you - quite the contrary. Your muscles need time to recover after every workout: that takes an average of 48 to 72 hours. If you train the same muscle group again before it has fully recovered, you are creating more damage than growth. In the long run, this can cause overtraining and injuries.

If you train the same muscle group again before it has fully recovered, you will create more damage than growth. In the long run, this can cause overtraining and injuries.

How often strength training?

  1. How often you can do strength training. In general, we recommend a maximum of three full body workouts per week. This way you can be sure that you give the recovery enough time and you can still train all muscle groups regularly.

  1. Do you want to do strength training more often? Then split your workouts into different muscle groups and make sure you always have at least one rest day between training the same muscle group. Also make sure that during those recovery days you do not accidentally put pressure on that muscle group, for example through compound exercises.

Cardio every day

  1. Cardio sports such as running and swimming place a lot less strain on the muscles. That means you also need less recovery time. So if you do cardio every day, the risk of overtraining is less.

  1. However, that doesn't mean you should do unlimited cardio. For example, long-term stress on your body can lead to a significant cortisol response, which makes it more difficult to lose weight. You can also burn muscle tissue with long-term cardio. That makes you neither slimmer nor healthier.

How Much Cardio Is Healthy?

  1. How much cardio is still recommended? In any case, we do not recommend that you participate in endurance sports for longer than an hour in a row. Then that cortisol response really gets going, with all its consequences.

  1. Do you enjoy running for half an hour every day? Then you can continue to do that fine. But if you're doing really intense interval workouts or long running workouts, one workout every other day is probably more than enough.

Walking every day

  1. Finally, there is the least intensive form of exercise. Think of walking, but also, for example, quiet cycling and all other activities that do not leave you breathless. This is the only kind of movement that it absolutely doesn't hurt to engage in on a daily basis.

  2. Finally, there is the least intensive form of exercise. Think of walking, but also, for example, slow cycling and all other activities that do not leave you breathless. This is the only kind of movement that it absolutely doesn't hurt to engage in on a daily basis.

  1. In fact, it is highly recommended to get moving every day. Just a half-hour walk every day can bring enormous benefits to your health. And then you really don't have to be fanatical about sports!

Is exercising every day healthy?

  1. In short: it is certainly good for you to keep active every day. Exercise every day is also possible, but you have to be careful not to overload yourself. After all, overtraining is the last thing you need.

  1. Besides a careful training schedule, variation is the best way to avoid problems. For example, you can do strength training three to four days a week, and then a short cardio workout for two more days. This way you can exercise very easily almost every day, without straining your muscles too much!
