Fluid Retention: Causes, Symptoms and Solutions

  1. Fluid retention (edema) occurs when moisture is not drawn from the body tissue, including our skin. However, there are several reasons why someone would suffer from fluid retention. For example, some of the causes could be the body's response to hot weather, excessive salt intake and the hormones associated with the menstrual cycle in women.

  1. Symptoms of fluid retention include swelling of certain body parts (eg feet, hands and ankles), a feeling of stiffness or pain in certain areas of the body and weight fluctuations.

  1. Contrary to popular belief, drinking plenty of water can help the kidneys flush out excess fluid. Fluid retention may be a sign of underlying problems or illness.

The two different forms of moisture retention

  1. Fluid regularly leaks from our blood into our body tissues. The lymphatic system is a network of tubes that travel throughout the body. This lymphatic system drains the residual fluid (called lymph) from our tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. Fluid retention (edema) occurs when fluid cannot be removed from the tissues.

  1. The two main categories of fluid retention are generalized edema, when swelling occurs in the body, and localized edema when only certain parts of the body are affected by fluid build-up.]

  1. As there are a wide variety of causes, it is recommended that you always see a doctor rather than trying to treat the problem yourself. The reason behind this is because edema can be symptomatic of serious medical conditions such as heart, kidney or liver disease. Fortunately, it is often not the case that edema has a life-threatening reason, but it is always better to have a medical specialist determine this.
