Is sandwich spread healthy or not?
-
Which sandwich fillings are healthy, and what should you not eat? The better we read packaging, the more we wonder what still fits within a responsible diet. And certainly so much nonsense is added to sandwich fillings that this question is completely justified. A rule of thumb that often works is that savory toppings are usually better than sweet toppings.

Vegetables in sandwich spread
-
The Heinz sandwich spread jars proudly state that this topping contains more than 30% vegetables. That is good news, you would say: after all, vegetables are almost by definition healthy. Still, there are some catches. For example, that â € ˜more than 30% â € ™ is little more than 30%: about a third of the spread consists of vegetables.

In addition, the proud bell peppers on the label are a bit disappointing. The most commonly used vegetable is white cabbage; the peppers only make up a few percent of the final spread. And of course there are plenty of other ingredients in the spread. If they aren't healthy, those vegetables won't save the day.

Macronutrients in sandwich spread
-
As mentioned, sandwich spread consists of vegetables with a kind of salad dressing. It is therefore not surprising that a large part of the product consists of oils and fats. The natural version contains about 19 grams of fat per 100 grams. This is slightly less for the other variants: 12 to 15 grams. The proteins are disappointing: with all variants between 1.5 and 1.7 grams.
-
For avid athletes, the sandwich spread has little to offer in that area. The rest of the 235 calories per 100 grams come from the carbohydrates that the spread contains. Depending on the variant, this is between 12 and 20 grams per 100 grams. The fibers remain around the gram.

Sugar and salt in sandwich spread
-
It becomes really problematic when we look at the further additions to the sandwich spread. For starters, there are those carbohydrates. They partly come from the vegetables, but a larger part consists of sugars! In total there are 14 grams of sugar per 100 grams in a jar of natural spread. With the other variants it is between 11 and 18 grams.

That means that almost a fifth of the product is simply sugar! There is also a lot to be said about the amount of salt. The spread contains about 2 grams of salt per 100 grams. Since many Dutch people eat way too much of it, that's not a good thing.
Is sandwich spread healthy?
-
The answer to our main question may be clear by now. Of course, there are worse choices than sandwich spread. It is not pure sugar, such as sugar sprinkles or chocolate spread. And yes, there are some vegetables that speak for this spread. The problem is that â € not the worstâ € ™ certainly doesn't equal â € goodâ € ™.

And sandwich spread is impossible to call really healthy. With all the unnecessary additives and the lack of protein and fiber, most athletes will not be able to do much with it. Moreover, the question remains why you would actually want to choose a sandwich spread. After all, there are so many tastier and healthier alternatives to invest your bread with!

Alternatives to sandwich spread
-
Did you always eat sandwich spread to get some extra vegetables? Don't worry: there are many more ways to do that with your sandwich. Most alternatives are also very easy and tasty. We certainly recommend that you experiment a bit more there. For example, consider the following ideas:
-
With some yoghurt, crumbled feta and cubes of cucumber you can make a quick alternative to sandwich spread with cucumber. And then without sugar! Thanks to the feta, salt is no longer necessary; rather season with a pinch of cumin for some unexpected spice.
-
Whether you combine cottage cheese with roasted bell pepper, celery or cucumber, it is all equally delicious. Add a lot of pepper, and possibly a slice of chicken fillet. Also tasty: pine nuts or pumpkin seeds over your hüttenkäse sandwich.
-
Humus itself is of course already very healthy, because it is made from legumes. With pumpkin you also add vegetables to it. Season with cumin, curry and possibly a pinch of cinnamon to taste.
-
Baba anoush is an aubergine puree originally from the Middle East. With a somewhat smoky taste, it is the ideal basis for a sandwich with raw vegetables. This way you can easily get even more fresh vegetables!
