Magnesium pills to stop ringing in your ears

One in ten adults would walk around with it and even one in three would have to deal with it at some point in their life. Several clinical studies have shown that low levels of magnesium in the blood are often associated with a greater risk of hearing loss from noise exposure.

Tinnitus can be caused by a whole list of factors ranging from ear infections, adverse reactions to some medications (including aspirin) and high blood pressure to age-related hearing loss. Prolonged exposure to noise and music can trigger the tinnitus. Well-known musicians who suffer from this condition include Phil Collins and Eric Clapton.
-
Tinnitus can affect one or both ears and no real cure is known so far. The condition appears to be linked to problems with the hair cells in the inner ear. These cells vibrate in response to sound waves and these vibrations are then translated into electrical signals that are sent to the brain via the nerves.

When these cells become weakened or damaged - from infection or overexposure to noise, for example - they send a stream of abnormal signals to the nerves. The brain interprets these signals as a ringing, buzzing or hissing sound. Damage to these hair cells can also cause deafness.
Magnesium and the role it plays in our body
-
Magnesium is required to ensure normal nerve function in the body. Good sources of this are green leafy vegetables and dairy products. The recommended daily dose of magnesium is 300mg. Higher doses can cause cramps, diarrhea and complications in people with kidney disease. It is therefore best to only use higher doses under medical supervision.
-
One function that magnesium has in our body is to ensure that it does not release too much calcium. Calcium causes small blood vessels to narrow. Poor blood flow to the hair cells could cause tinnitus because they do not get enough oxygen and nutrients in this way. Another theory is that magnesium blocks glutamate. A chemical in our brain that is responsible for transmitting signals between nerve cells.

Too much or too little?
-
Although this substance is important for the transmission of messages between the brain and the rest of our body, too much of it can also damage nerve cells, especially in our auditory system. Previous studies have suggested that exposure to noise can overproduction of glutamate.
-
Dr. Ralph Holme, head of a study service for deaf people (RNID), says: “The daily lives of people suffering from tinnitus can be very stressful and frustrating. We therefore hope to find effective treatment methods for tinnitus soon. More extensive studies of the effect of magnesium are certainly needed.â €

Half of the group will receive a placebo, the other half will receive a daily pill containing a mix of the anti-oxidant beta-carotene and vitamins C and E. The research team hopes that the antioxidants will protect the cells in the participants' ear.
-
The group, of which no one has hearing problems at the moment, will take these pills for two years and will also be tested all the time. Studies on animals have already shown that the combination of these substances can protect against hearing loss. This is the first study that will now also look at what the effect would be in humans.
What is the result?
-
So research is still in full swing, but science seems well on its way to treating tinnitus more effectively. And a few simple supplements may prove to be the solution.
