Seborrheic Eczema: What is it and how do you treat it?

  1. Seborrhoeic eczema is a common mild form of eczema that makes the skin look oily and especially flaky (1). Often it occurs on the scalp only. In adults, a link is often made with dandruff and in babies a link is made with diaper rash. Seborrheic Dermatitis can also affect other areas of the body such as your face, chest, and areas on the arms, legs, and groin.

  1. What are the causes? Doctors and specialists do not yet know the exact cause of seborrheic eczema. The cause also differs in babies and adults because of the way the body deals with eczema. Seborrheic dermatitis can also occur because of a genetic role, but it usually occurs in babies and disappears around puberty. It may also be caused by a yeast called malassezia and normally occurs on the skin in small amounts. But sometimes the amount increases and the result is skin problems and of course seborrheic eczema.

  1. The malassezia ensures that cells are replaced faster and you also get flakes and inflammation. It can also easily be confused with psoriasis due to its appearance.

  1. Research has shown that the risk of developing seborrhoeic eczema increases in women who follow a Western diet (2).

How is Seborrheic Eczema Treated?

  1. The treatment of seborrheic dermatitis depends on a number of factors. First, the location of the eczema and of course its age. Overall, the focus is to reduce fungus on the skin (3).

  1. For example, seborrhoeic eczema on the scalp (dandruff) in adults is treated with an effective shampoo. There are many brands and types of shampoos on the market, and the goal is to reduce the amount of yeast. Normally you use an anti-dandruff shampoo a few times a week until you get it under control. Then repeat to control it.

  1. This form of eczema is also treated with coconut oil. A coconut oil mask can kill the fungus that causes the eczema and coconut oil helps to hydrate the skin properly. This kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

  1. You can also consider asking your doctor for a lotion to deal with stubborn problems immediately in combination with an effective shampoo.

  1. Obviously, seborrheic dermatitis is treated differently in babies than in adults. This is because you have to be much more careful with babies to deal with eczema. Often, a mild shampoo is started and a soft brush such as a toothbrush is used to remove the excess flakes. But be careful because loosening the skin can increase the risk of infections. Always consult a doctor before doing such a thing!

  1. If shampoo does not work well, go to your doctor for a stronger version (with sulfur).

What can I do now?

  1. During my research on various chronic skin conditions I have come to the conclusion that it is mainly due to a lifestyle that causes eczema. Â Make sure you have good hygiene and get started with an affordable anti-dandruff shampoo that you can get without a prescription.

  1. Fungus is one of the main causes of seborrheic dermatitis. Hygiene must therefore mainly focus on preventing fungus on the skin. Mold benefits from moisture and heat. Therefore, try to ensure that your skin stays dry. You can do this, for example, by wearing cotton clothing.

  1. When you exercise, sweat that stays on for too long can also cause mold. Washing yourself daily and drying well is therefore the most sensible way to reduce this eczema.

  1. If you have facial hair, such as a beard or mustache, consider shaving it. This allows your skin to air better and the fungus has less grip. A beard or mustache can make the eczema in those areas worse than it should be. The temptation to hide it is of course great, but the chance that you will get rid of it is a lot smaller.

  1. When you wash yourself it is important to use a nourishing shampoo. This shampoo can be anti-dandruff, but also have an anti-fungal effect. Shampoo with extra zinc can help very well. Tar in the shampoo is also recommended for some people, but it is generally used for people with psoriasis. Shampoo with salicylic acid also helps against this form of eczema. This substance is also found in fruit, willow bark and cacti. If you search the internet for shampoos with this substance, you can find several of them.

  1. Tea tree oil can also help against this form of eczema. If this is added to the shampoo it can also be very effective.

  1. Applying aloe vera to the places where you suffer from seborrhoeic eczema can also reduce this. In a study where people applied aloe vera twice a day to areas with this form of eczema, more than 60 percent had less problems with the scaly patches afterwards.

  1. I also recommend that you strengthen your immune system by eating as healthy as possible and drinking plenty of water for a period of time. You can supplement this with resistance-increasing supplements. For example, taking fish oil supplements provides more omega 3. Research shows that taking fish oil supplements reduces seborrheic dermatitis.

  1. Also avoid products with alcohol as this can cause a revival of this form of eczema.

  1. For diaper rash it is smart to talk to your doctor because of the sensitivity of babies and to treat this form of seborrhoeic eczema in a milder way!

Finally ...

  1. Seborrhoeic eczema is very annoying and can affect both small children and adults. The treatment for these 2 groups is different. With small children you have to be very careful and it is best to consult a doctor for the correct approach.

  1. As an adult, you can do a lot by adapting the care products you use and by buying clothing that breathes a lot, such as cotton shirts. As a result, the fungus that causes this eczema has less chance to take effect.
