Swollen face (puffy face): causes of treatment

  1. A swollen face indicates swelling of the face. You may occasionally wake up after sleeping with a swollen or puffy face. This can happen because of pressure on your face while sleeping. However, a swollen face can also arise from a facial injury or an underlying medical condition. A swollen face does not only have to be limited to the face, but can also include the neck or throat. If there are no injuries to the face, facial swelling may indicate a medical emergency. Treatment for a swollen face depends on the cause. With a slow thyroid gland you will be given thyroid medication and with overweight it is important to lose weight. During pregnancy, a woman may experience a swollen face. That is a normal phenomenon. But it can also indicate pre-eclampsia or preeclampsia and in that case treatment (in a hospital) is definitely needed.
