How many calories are there in wine? And is (red) wine healthy?

  1. It is clear that most alcohol is not very healthy, but you hear mixed stories about wine. It is often said of red wine that a glass a day is healthy. But is that correct?

  1. In this article we will discuss how wine works: is it a calorie bomb or a panacea for a longer life? How many calories are in wine? And is (red) wine healthy, or is it disappointing?

Calories in wine

  1. First of all, wine is regularly presented as a 'secret fatter'. Is that reasonable? For that we must of course first look at how many calories there are in wine.

  1. Red wine contains on average the most calories of the different wine types: 82 calories per 100 ml. Of course there is some difference between them. In general, you can assume that your wine will provide more calories when it tastes more powerful. Smooth red wine, on the other hand, is on average a bit slimmer.

  1. However, the difference is not very great. So for most red wines you can safely use 82 calories as a benchmark.

  1. With white wine, the amount of calories per 100 ml varies a lot more. Dry white wine is considerably less rich in calories than the average red wine. You can assume about 67 calories. Sweeter wines, on the other hand, contain a lot more energy. Which is not surprising, given the higher amount of sugars. In that case, assume about 96 calories per 100 ml.

  1. As a kind of â € averageâ € ™ between red and white wine, rosé contains less calories than red, but a little more than white. Again, the exact amount depends of course on the sweetness of the rosé in question. On average you can expect about 71 calories per 100 ml of wine.

Calories per glass of wine

  1. Even if you know the calories per 100 ml, you should know approximately how much wine there is in your glass! And that is often more difficult to determine than you think. Unlike many other drinks, such as beer and liqueur, there is no clear consensus on the contents of a â € standard glassâ € ™ of wine.

  1. In the Netherlands, 100 ml per glass is usually used, but there are also countries where 150 ml is the norm. In addition, wine glasses are quickly overfilled. For example, it is more difficult to say how much you actually consume. So pay attention to this when calculating the calories!

Is wine fattening?

  1. These numbers don't look very alarming yet. However, it is important to realize that alcohol usually influences your digestion and energy management more than can only be expressed in the above figures!

  1. A glass of drink does not only provide calories. The alcohol also disrupts your metabolism. This ensures that you will store more fat. You also often eat a lot more with a glass. So too much wine can quickly lead to weight gain.

Health benefits of wine

  1. And yet you often hear that a glass of red wine a day would be healthy! How about that? Indeed, there are studies that attribute various health benefits to wine; For example, think of:

  1. Please note: this all applies with a maximum of one glass per day. If you drink more wine, it will be unhealthy anyway!

Disadvantages of wine

  1. Still, the Nutrition Center does not recommend drinking wine, for example. Why not? Simply put: because there are also disadvantages associated with such a glass of wine a day! For example, it also increases the risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer. Long-term alcohol consumption can also damage the liver.

  1. And that's all under the assumption that you really stick to one glass of wine a day. Drinking more alcohol also increases the risk of more cancers, strokes, obesity and depression.

Is (red) wine healthy?

  1. In short: is that glass of red wine healthy or should you leave it alone? If you don't drink alcohol now, there is no reason to start drinking more. Wine has modest benefits, but it is certainly not a cure-all for health.

  1. Do you drink regularly now? Then it is an improvement if you can reduce that to a maximum of one glass of red wine per day: that has more advantages than more drinks or other drinks. However, be careful not to drink anymore, and still take an alcohol-free day every now and then. This way you avoid becoming dependent on it.
