Make your own lipstick: three ways

  1. There are several methods to make your own lipstick. For example, only use natural ingredients, eyeshadow or crayons to make the desired color for your new lipstick. In ready-to-use lipsticks, it is sometimes difficult to find out which ingredients they contain. By making your own lipstick, you know exactly what's in it. Many people don't know how easy it is to make your own cosmetics, but with a few simple tips you can do this in a jiffy.

How can you make your own lipstick?

  1. There are several methods to make your own lipstick. Make a natural lipstick yourself, use your favorite eye shadow or crayons for lipstick in a crazy color.

Know what you are lubricating

  1. Lipstick contains a lot of chemicals. Did you know that some of the stuff ends up in your stomach after you polish your lips? You lick your lips for a moment or the stuff sticks to your food, causing you to accidentally ingest lipstick. Now these ingredients are often not harmful to you, because cosmetics have to comply with all kinds of rules, but if you make your lipstick yourself, you know exactly what is in it. For example, you can simply choose to use only natural ingredients. Know what you 'eat', shall we say…

What's in Ready-to-Use Lipstick?

  1. Store-bought lipsticks contain ingredients with all kinds of complicated chemical names. Certainly not only natural products. Some examples are:

Natural lipstick

  1. Keep it simple and natural by using ingredients that have been used in lipstick for thousands of years. With these natural ingredients you can make your own favorite lipstick:

Was

  1. To turn the lipstick into a solid substance, you need wax. For example, buy beeswax or beeswax granules to make your lipstick. Candelilla wax - a vegan product that comes from the candelilla bush - is also a good basis for your new beauty product.

Oil

  1. To give your lipstick some shine, you need oil. Choose an oil that you like, such as almond oil, olive oil or jojoba oil. You can also use coconut oil.

Butter

  1. Mixing avocado butter, almond butter, mango butter or shea butter into your lipstick makes it easy to spread the stuff on your lips.

Pigment

  1. Add color to your lipstick with natural pigments. For example, beetroot powder gives a deep red color. With cinnamon you make a reddish brown lipstick. Cocoa powder is also a good pigment: it gives the lipstick a dark brown shade. Turmeric gives your mixture a warm copper color. Of course you can also mix some of the different powders to get the color you want.

Mixing ingredients for your homemade lipstick

  1. Start mixing your ingredients by putting a teaspoon of oil, a teaspoon of butter and a teaspoon of wax in a small bowl. Place the mixture in the microwave and heat the ingredients until they are well melted. Stir well to make a smooth mixture.

Lipstick with Eyeshadow

  1. Do you think it's too much work to mix all the ingredients yourself? With eyeshadow you can easily make a new lipstick: all you need is eyeshadow and petroleum jelly. To make your own lipstick with your favorite color eyeshadow, you need a powder version. You put this powder in a bowl. Then mash it well. There should be no more pieces or grains in it. Then you add some petroleum jelly to the powder. Don't have petroleum jelly at home? Then you can also use a colorless lip balm.

Proportions of petroleum jelly and eyeshadow

  1. The eyeshadow-petroleum jelly ratio determines how deep the color becomes. Logically, the more eyeshadow you use, the darker and deeper the color becomes. If you use a lot of petroleum jelly and a little eye shadow powder, you will get a more transparent lipstick. Put the mixture in the microwave for a while to melt the petroleum jelly and stir well. Voilà, your new lipstick is ready. Let it cool down and harden for a while and it is ready to use.

Making lipstick with crayons

  1. If you would like a bright pink, ocher yellow or cobalt blue lipstick, you can make it yourself with crayons. Because chalk is made for small children who often put their writing utensils in their mouths, manufacturers take a high degree of safety into account. So swallowing a little - as almost always happens accidentally with lipstick - is not problematic.

All colors of the rainbow

  1. Basically you can find crayons in almost any color. Can't find your desired shade? Then mix two or more colors until you get your perfect color. Give the crayons a sniff before you buy, because of course you don't want to walk around with a strongly scented lipstick - not one with a crayon scent anyway.

Melting crayons

  1. Remove the wrapper from the chalk and melt the chalk au bain marie. This means that you put the chalk in a pan and then put that pan in a larger pan. Fill the large pan with water and put it on the hob. The heat of the water in the large pan will melt your chalk. This way you prevent the chalk from burning and becoming unusable. Mix oil into the melted chalk, such as olive oil, almond oil, or coconut oil.

Nice scented lipstick

  1. Add a few drops of the essential oil to your lipstick blend before it cools down to add a nice scent. A lovely rose scent, fresh peppermint or floral lavender scent completes your homemade lipstick.

Keep in a cosmetic jar

  1. To store your lipstick, pour the mixture into a clean cosmetic jar or lip balm tin. A jar with a lid ensures that your lipstick can be stored for a long time and is easy to store. Let the mixture cool before closing the jar. Once your lipstick has cooled, it is ready to use.

Hygiene and shelf life

  1. Your homemade lipstick has a shelf life of about six months. Because of use, bacteria will spread in the jar. Using the same lipstick for longer than six months is therefore not recommended. To prevent the spread of bacteria, you can apply the lipstick to your lips with a brush or make-up brush. This is more hygienic than applying with your fingers. Even when you press the lipstick against your lips to apply it, you get bacteria build-up.
