Living Longer With Resveratrol Part 1: intro
-
Resveratrol, a naturally occurring substance found in the skins of red grapes, suddenly came into the public consciousness a few years ago when medical researchers showed that it significantly extended the lifespan of laboratory animals and developing physiological signs of diabetes.

-
Research available to date shows that resveratrol supplements can improve the health of people at risk for many age-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.
-
However, it is also possible that supplementation also has disadvantages, such as that resveratrol can disrupt the liver enzymes responsible for the metabolism of drugs.

What is Reservatrol?
-
Resveratrol is a chemical compound derived from certain plants. It is called a phytoalexin, which means that it is naturally an antibiotic to fight bacteria and fungi. Plants with resveratrol include the grapes and skins from which wine is made. But other berries such as raspberries, blueberries, etc. also contain the substance.
-
[!Pullquote] Besides being found from certain grapes, peanuts also contain a lot of the dust! Â [!/ pullquote]

Many people believe that resveratrol has anti-aging properties, which has led to the substance, usually derived from the Japanese knotweed, being marketed as a dietary supplement.

French lifestyle One of the first reasons that resveratrol was considered to be potentially good for our bodies was because of the observation of the French lifestyle. It is remarkable that the French eat more fat, but have a relatively low share of cardiovascular diseases.
-
Many believe that the lower levels of cardiovascular disease are the result of the frequent consumption of red wine. While red wine has been shown to have anti-coagulant effects, many believe resveratrol may play a role too.

Resveratrol is a substance that belongs to the group of antioxidants known as polyphenols.
-
Preliminary studies suggest that resveratrol may be an excellent antioxidant. It may help shift exercise tolerance and help reduce memory loss. [!Pullquote] There is even some evidence that it has the potential to attack retroviruses such as HIV and herpes simplex. [!/ pullquote]

Polyphenols Polyphenols are a large family of natural substances that are widely distributed in plant foods. Daily consumption in the Netherlands varies from 200 mg to 1 gram. Green tea polyphenols and those in wine have received a lot of media attention. The most abundant polyphenols in plants are flavonoids, phenolic acid, catechins, anthocyanins, isoflavones, quercetin, and resveratrol.

-
Many scientific studies and investigations have been conducted to evaluate the effects of these substances on the human body. Many of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables are attributed to the presence of these compounds.
-
Some of the major polyphenols such as flavones, flavonoids, resveratrol, and isoflavones have known antioxidant properties. They are also believed to have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, this has already been proven to be particularly helpful in improving health and general well-being.
-
Many studies are still ongoing There are potentially many other health benefits as the actual health promoting actions of polyphenols are still being studied. The best way to enjoy the benefits of polyphenols is to eat enough foods that contain these chemical compounds.

Resveratrol and anti-aging have been frequently linked in the modern healthcare literature since 2011 due to research evidence that a diet rich in resveratrol can lower the risk of fatal diseases such as cancer and diabetes , and it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
-
The most common reason that resveratrol and anti-aging are often mentioned together is that polyphenol is present in several popular grape and peanut-based foods. Antioxidants are linkages that bind to free radical oxygen molecules. in the blood stream, this can prevent oxidation. Oxidation can break down human tissues and inhibit cellular repair, leading to gradual aging.
-
Not received enough attention Research on resveratrol and anti-aging effects on humans has not received much attention in human biology research since 2011, mainly because the primary research on aging has been conducted on primitive life forms such as yeast, nematodes and fruit flies.
-
These study results have not been reproduced in long-term human pharmacology studies to date.
-
When the use of resveratrol for different treatments has been studied, the results are usually positive. An extensive analysis of more than 100 resveratrol studies by the University of Connecticut in the US has shown that the compound has an overall beneficial effect in combating the onset of common diseases, but that there is no clear evidence of resveratrol and anti-aging effects.
-
We could logically assume that if the compound prevents or slows down the onset of disease, it could also extend lifespan.
-
A 2008 review of resveratrol and anti-aging related effects research by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that resveratrol reduced the age-related decline in mice on a standard diet, but that it did not extend the natural lifespan of the mice.
-
Effects on mice after 10 months of treatment included cardiovascular improvements, increases in bone density, and functional or mobility improvements. In addition, there was better balance and coordination in old mice than in the control group that had not been treated.
Preventing certain health complaints
-
Resveratrol has been highlighting its reported anti-aging benefits. But further research, mostly done in test tubes and in animals, indicates that resveratrol can help protect the body against a number of diseases, including:
-
Research in rodents suggests that resveratrol may also be able to counter some of the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle and lead to an increased lifespan. Resveratrol-treated mice fed a higher calorie diet lived longer than comparable fed mice that did not receive resveratrol.
-
Resveratrol has also been linked to the prevention of age-related problems such as heart disease and insulin resistance.
-
It appears that resveratrol activates a special gene that protects the body from aging.
